With 875MWdc of solar PV and an unprecedented 3,287MWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity, it surpasses previous records, including Vistra's 750MW/3,000MWh facility at Moss Landing, California, which had previously held the title of the world's largest BESS.
Located on a sprawling 4,600-acre site in Kern County, this colossal project integrates 1.9 million PV modules from First Solar with BESS units sourced from LG Chem, Samsung, and BYD, collectively delivering an energy storage capacity of 3,287MWh.
However, conflicting reports regarding the status of the largest operational BESS in the US persist. Prior claims have highlighted Gateway and Manatee BESS in Florida as contenders, with Manatee BESS notably holding a 409MW capacity. Yet, recent developments indicate that Vistra Energy's facility in Monterey County, California, may hold the current title, boasting a 300MW/1200MWh capacity (first phase) that went live in December 2020.
It's crucial to note that these figures and rankings are subject to change as new projects come online and existing ones expand.
