Gansu Province Accelerates New Energy Investments with Innovative Battery Projects

Gansu is intensifying its investment in the new energy industry. Recently, Jiuquan City's Panke Zhirui Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. secured environmental impact assessment approval for its 4GWh Sodium-ion Battery Smart Integration and Ancillary Industry Manufacturing Project (Phase I). Located in the Jiuquan Economic and Technological Development Zone (South Park), Gansu Province, the project boasts a total investment of RMB 600 million, encompassing cell factories, energy storage accessory factories, smart integration factories, among others.

China's Gansu Province Boosts New Energy Industry with Smart Battery Projects

Gansu Province is hastily geared toward developing its new energy industry, especially in terms of energy storage. One of the major developments recently has been that in Jiuquan City, Panke Zhirui Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. obtained environmental approval for its 4GWh Sodium-ion Battery Smart Integration and Ancillary Industry Manufacturing Project (Phase I). This is part of Gansu's strategic push to be at the forefront of innovative battery technology and energy storage systems.

Located in the Jiuquan Economic and Technological Development Zone, the first phase of the project involves an investment of RMB 600 million, setting up production facilities for sodium-ion batteries and related systems. Upon completion, this will add 4GWh of energy storage capacity using sodium-ion batteries. The project also constitutes the essential route to accelerate the construction of energy storage infrastructure in the province. In addition, this project would lead to the establishment of China's first national laboratory for Sodium-ion Batteries in High-altitude and Cold Regions.

The Panke Zhirui project is a major piece in the rapidly expanding battery industry in Gansu; the total investment plan will reach RMB 1.4 billion in two phases. Sodium-ion battery materials and smart integration systems will be produced in Phase II with an additional investment of RMB 800 million.

New Energy Projects Surge in Gansu

By 2023, aside from the Panke Zhirui project, a host of large-scale battery projects had been launched across Gansu. For example:

In July, one high-performance lithium-ion battery anode material project, valued at RMB 3 billion, was signed in the Lanzhou New Area, with a view to building a 100,000-ton production base.
In June, an investment of RMB 1.5 billion launched the Guanghe New Energy 4GWh Sodium-ion Energy Storage Battery Equipment Manufacturing Project in Min County Industrial Park. Around the same time, approval was granted for the Jueshi New Energy 5GWh Sodium-ion Battery Manufacturing Project; the 5GWh Sodium-ion Battery Base Project of Jingding Xuyang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. started construction in Liangzhou District.
The public tender held in Gansu in May invested RMB 3.5 billion in the Jinchang City 10GWh Sodium-ion Battery Base Project. Similarly, the Wuwei City Liangzhou District 2GWh Energy Storage Sodium-ion Battery Base Project invited investments. It will be investing RMB 1 billion in the construction of Phase I for 2GWh production lines.
Construction of the Dunhuang Fangcun New Energy Co., Ltd. 5GWh Sodium-ion Battery Project started in April, with an investment of RMB 2 billion. The 6.2GWh Zhongna Energy Storage Gansu Base, with an investment of RMB 1 billion, also went into production.
In March, Shanghai Panke kicked off its 4GWh Sodium-ion Battery Manufacturing Project in Jiuquan, marking the further realization of Gansu's status as an energy storage technology innovation center.
