Dubai, local time, August 7th — China Energy Engineering Group International Corporation, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group, and TotalEnergies signed an EPC contract for the 1GW Latawi Photovoltaic Project in Iraq. The groundbreaking project will be a key step in the Iraqi government's photovoltaic endeavor and further extend China Energy Engineering International's global footprint in the renewable energy sector.
Project Overview
The Latawi Photovoltaic Project is located in Basra Governorate, approximately 70 km away from the city of Basra, in the south of Iraq. The project involves a photovoltaic power plant design, procurement, and construction with a 132-kV step-up substation, having an installed capacity of 1 GW AC side. The power plant is expected to generate 2.9 billion kWh of electricity a year upon operation and will save approximately 2.385 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. It will go a long way towards addressing Iraq's rapidly growing demand for electricity, diversifying its supply, and supporting the ongoing economic reconstruction of the country.
Key Partners and Timeline
It will be implemented jointly by China Energy Engineering International, Tianjin Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd., and the Southwest Electric Power Design Institute of China Energy Engineering Group. It is expected to start construction by the end of this year and be commissioned at the beginning of 2027. China Energy Engineering International will continue to pay close attention to high localization in the construction process to create job opportunities for the residents and promote regional economic development.
Strategic Impact
This project marks a major step toward turning Iraq into renewable energy to complement the nation's efforts of diversifying its energy portfolio and reducing its carbon footprint. For China Energy Engineering International, it represents another milestone in international cooperation, having in view, among others, the exploration of new energy markets in cooperation with big multinational corporations like TotalEnergies. The project will also be part of the Belt and Road Initiative and Iraq's general reconstruction effort, with a view to enhancing capacity building and economic resilience.
Legacy in Iraq
Since its entry into the Iraqi market in 2011, China Energy Engineering International has accomplished a series of high-profile infrastructure projects. Among them are the Basra 650MW Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Power Plant Expansion, the Huashide 2X610MW Power Station, and the Missan 2X47MW Gas-fired Power Station. This role will be further uplifted by the company with the Latawi Photovoltaic Project for Iraq's energy transition.
Future Outlook
China Energy Engineering International perceives the Latawi Photovoltaic Project as marking an important step toward deeper penetration into Iraq's renewable energy sector. In the "Three Leads and One Cooperation" strategy, innovation will come in for its development model, with the main development through its comprehensive professional acumen and powerful partnerships ushering in an era of synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and the reconstruction effort in Iraq.
In the process, this project has also highlighted not only the increase in cooperation between China and Iraq, but also the move the world over towards renewable energy. Also, Chendia becomes an important player in the shaping of Iraq's future energy infrastructure.
